Osteoporosis

Approximately, 1 in 4 women over the age of 50 have osteoporosis.  Sometimes referred to as the “silent thief”,  it usually has no symptoms and is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.  These lead to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture,  particularly of the hip, spine and wrist.

The following are crucial to your bone health:
  • Getting plenty of calcium -  Your bones depend on calcium for strength, approximate requirement for women 50 and older is 1200-1500mg/day.
  • Vitamin D -  A key factor in calcium absorption. The sunshine vitamin, however, if you live in a climate like much of Canada you will need to supplement with approximately 800 - 2000 IU /day for women 50 and over.
  • Physical activity -   assists in building and maintaining healthy bones.

So, lets all grab a straw and carton of milk,  go for a nice walk in the sunshine and keep our bones healthy!!

This is some great info! I started doing Jenny Craig for weight loss back in December and that program ensures you get all your daily requirements. I was so surprised to see how much milk/milk products I was missing in my previous diet!

It's oh so important.

Very good post!! I think everyone should be aware of Osteoporosis. I happen to have osteoporosis.

Did you know candida can cause osteoporosis? I have probably had candida for a lot of my life and didn't know it. Candida sucks the vitamins and minerals right out of your body... so of course OSTEOPOROSIS.

To all you women out there.... Be very careful when taking any antibiotics. You might end up in the boat with me.

That is a post I will be doing soon....

I think it's fantastic that you are working so hard to spread awareness. There are so many things we can do when younger to protect our bodies as we age, and making sure to get enough calcium is one of those.

(I can't remember if I commented yet, but I'm following you back and can't wait to learn more!)

I've been taking Vitamin D because I've read quite a bit about that deficiency - and it's unbelievable, I've been so much healthier this cold/flu season than other years. I just got over a cold, so that might sound weird, but seriously our family has been super healthy with extra Vitamin D! Thanks for checking out my blog - yours looks fabulous!

I def need to get more calcium. I should start taking a suplement. I don't really like milk so I know I'm not getting enough throughout the day. Thanks for writing this post and reminding me. Thank you also for visiting my site.

Thanks for stopping by! I am now following. You have a lot of awesome info here! I am going to send my mom over to check you out, as she is in her late 40's and is experiencing the first signs of menopause and is having some sort of mid-life crisis. (I think.) I love that you advocate confidence in older women! My mom needs to know it's OKAY to get older!

Hi Monica, well this one stopped me in my tracks as I wish I could like milk. I have osteoporosis and am a horrible patient. They tried me on Boniva, fosamax and acetol not sure of the spelling all made me deathly ill. Then I started on taking the chocolate chews they sell in the pharmacy when I remember.. so they scare the by jesus out of you wanting to avocate all those pills and to me they are poisioning your system. I love that you talk only about natural. I now read today that those pills strengthen the outside of the bone and inside is like saw dust, if you fall its like powder... and its still on the market! unreal thanks for this article... sorry for the long note, I am diffinitely following you back! Love your blog.
