The "Elephant" in the Room

OK....we all wonder about it, so...let's talk about "the elephant" in the room.....menopause!!!  My husband likes to call it "mental pause"...but, I tell him, that's not very nice!

You may or may not have reached this stage in your life; however, if you're a women and you're lucky to live long enough, it too will happen to you.

What is "menopause"?  Well, it comes from the Greek "mens", which means monthly and "pausis", which means cessation.  So, literally it would mean "monthly cessation", and, that's exactly what it is, the end of menstruation.  (Personally, I think menopause is amazing ...I've never been so happy to get rid of something in my life!!)

Menopause commonly occurs between the ages of 42 and 56, and, if you haven't had a period for one year you can say you have begun menopause.

Over the next several posts I will try to address other topics related to menopause...such as, hot flashes, peri-menopause, signs of menopause and induced menopause, to name a few.  I am by no means an expert in this field, but, if you have any questions I will do my best to get some information for you.

UGH! I've been in a pre-menopausal state for over 12 years now! What's up with that? Things come out of my mouth that I never knew existed and i feel like crying all the time. The crazy thing is my periods are more regular now than they ever were before menopause started...all I can say is somebody better do something about it and NOW!

hehehehe...hows that for sounding like a 'mental pause'?

As you can tell today is one of those days! I thinks I'll take myself out to lunch and shopping...want ta' come? :o)

I'm in my late 40s, so menopause is something sort of looming on my horizon...I'm curious to see what it will be like.

Visiting from Simply Stacy's Fun Follow Friday and am now a follower. Come follow me?

Fantastic! I just did the same, Saretta. And I'll come follow you too. I'll follow oldermommy too. I actually felt that menopause (men. Oh, pause!) should have been taught in high school or jr. high, really. They never prepared us for something like this. Look out!

My Mom just went through this. The beginning was pretty rough. She was an emotional wreck. Then she had super heavy menstruation paired with ginormous benign tumors which led to a complete hysterectomy. All her menopausal symptoms stopped but then she had other emotional issues with loosing her hormones. It's a hard time for a woman and I'm not really looking forward to it.

Hi, I'm now following you from The Apel's. I don't have menopause, but I have had breaks from pregnancies and breastfeeding. It was nice to have a break from a period.

Love the idea behind your blog! My husband and I are trying to start a family and I know how you feel--it seems like most blogs out there are for young mothers and sometimes I feel left out!

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. I'm now following yours!

I'm not to this stage yet, but my cycle was crazy irregular. That was one reason it took us 3 years to conceive!

Thanks for visiting - following you back!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog. When I first met my husband he was a bit of a hypochondriac. I once told him about my mother. "She has hot flashes and can't sleep. She's not feeling well because of her menopause."

He gasped. "Is that what they call it? I think I have it too."

Since then, over ten years to be exact, he's grown up and realized he doesn't have menopause. Thank God he didn't have it. Can you imagine him having that and all the other things he used to have as well!

I'm following from the entourage.

Hey there! Stopping in from the Chickadee hop and will be following you now! I thought I was starting perimenopause as my period's getting kind of goofy and I've had some rather um well. . .let's say un-nice days. I had them test my bloodwork and they said I am not starting Menopause. I don't think that means that i'm not starting Perimenopause, though. Anyway!!! Have a great Tuesday.

I'm with you on the amazing part! It's the only good thing about getting older that I really appreciate!! LOL

Don't forget to let your husband know the next time he mentions "mental" pause how many of our problems begin with "MEN" (menopause, menstruation, etc.)

Oh, and those hot flashes? I never saw any flash - mine was a slow burn!
