~ CLOSED ~ Beyond Broccoli: Creating a Biologically Balanced Diet When a Vegetarian Diet Doesn't Work by Susan Schenck - Review & Giveaway

Beyond Broccoli:  Creating a Biologically Balanced Diet When a Vegetarian Diet Doesn't Work by Susan Schenck explores the nutritional viability of vegetarian, vegan and raw diets;  the latter of which was very enlightening for me as I had never before heard the term.
If you are unfamiliar with her previous book,  The Live Food Factor: The Comprehensive Guide to the Ultimate Diet for Body, Mind, Spirit & Planet, it is touted as being one of the most comprehensive studies on the "raw food diet" and won the IPPY award as one of the most progressive health book of the year.

For years I have been considering adopting a vegetarian lifestyle.  I just don't enjoy eating meat, poultry or fish and usually I have to force myself to do so or play around with the food and discard it at the end of the meal.  I think the treatment of these animals is very often cruel and unethical and I also questioned the nutritional benefit of putting this foreign flesh into my body.

After reading this book I'm now going to have to rethink the nutritional value of a vegetarian diet.
The author who for six years followed a raw vegan diet followed by a year of raw vegetarianism began to exhibit health issues such as B12 deficiency, memory problems, muscle tissue loss and irritability.  After exhaustive research, she came to the conclusion that a lack of vital nutrients, found only in animal products was causing her problems.

If you, like me, are struggling with the question of adopting a strict vegetarian diet you should read this book.  It is absolutely full of information with such interesting chapters as:
  • ·         Vegetarian Myths Dispelled
  • ·         Can a Vegan or Vegetarian Diet Give You Peak Health?
  • ·         Man's Dietary History
  • ·         Your Brain on a Plant-Only Diet
  • ·         Metabolic Types:  Why We Can't All "Go Veg"
  • ·         Burning Fat Instead of Sugar
  • ·         and, Meat: Correct Physiologically If Not Politically, to mention but a few.
Unbeknownst to me, I've been handling my diet in a fairly nutritionally correct manner all along.  I eat a mainly vegetarian diet with a bit of cooked meat, poultry and fish (I don't think I could force myself to eat these proteins raw)
This book is well worth reading, especially if you are a vegetarian or are considering becoming a vegetarian.

I learned that vegetarian and vegan lifestyles can be detrimental to some people's health due to a lack of proteins and nutrients that can only be found in animal products.
