Create a home-made Halloween costume by recycling some items in your home.
(I've posted this a day earlier than usual to allow some costume creating time!)
My Mom would put me in my older sister’s flannel nightgown, give me a bottle to hold and voila, I was a "baby". My brothers seemed to always be "hobos", Mom would dig out some old worn-out clothes, sew on some material scraps for patches, mess up their hair, smear dirt on their face and out the door they would go! Oh, and there was always the old worn out bed sheet, with two holes for eyes, instant "ghost".

That's how we did it too. I remember wanting to be a Fortune Teller over and over again - probably because of the bright red lipstick and the hoop earrings!

My 13 yr old is making a robot costume..and we're piecing others together, witch, can-can dancer, zombie...with minimal items to pick up (mainly make up). ReplyDeleteI don't remember being terribly "Green" about my halloween costumes when I was a kid, but I never wore anything I bought until college, when I bought my first slutty looking french maid costume. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI had really creative parents. And we live in utah, so those bought costumes were too cold. We needed costumes that we could be bundled in. A lot of the time, they were made around a certain colored sweat pants/shirt combo. Once, I was a pig- my mom took pink sweats and sewed baby bottle nipples down the front and I had a pig mask. Once, I was a mummy- white sweats and my dad safety pinned strips of muslin all over the things. Once, I was a bat, and we cut out black wings from black fabric and safety pinned them to a black hoodie. You know. that kind of thing. Warm and home made. In high school, I did a lot of vampire stuff- black lacey dresses and goth makeup. Hahah.

We had our own 'tickle trunk' in the basement we used for many years. Now the little 'angel' has her own 'tickle trunk' full of home made costumes.

I had this very conversation with my 4 yr old (also have a 24 yr old :-) yesterday morning while getting her dressed in her Tinker Bell costume for her school party. She had asked me what I dressed up as at Halloween when I was a kid. Not sure that one could give any of our get-ups a definite identity, I did tell her that on occasion, we were lucky enough to have a plastic mask but the rest was left up to us to find in my mom's funky closet collection (she throws nothing out!) and a whole lot of creativity. ReplyDeleteI remember possibly being a hobo. My mom sewed a ballerina costume for me once, which I loved. I don't like buying pre-made costumes b/c then there's the chance that there are hundreds of others out there that look just like you in your own neighborhood!
